2018-02-19 19:00:00 2018-02-19 21:00:00 America/Vancouver Keeping Your Kids Safe Online: Internet Literacy and Education for Parents The Prince George District Parent Advisory Council, in cooperation with the Prince George School District, invites all parents to attend an evening educational session regarding online safety and children. Regular admission is $5, parents can also select a free ticket, or by donation. We want everyone to be able to attend. The sessions will be presented by The White Hatter of the award-winning organization Personal Protection Systems Inc. If you haven't had the opportunity to see the White Hatter before, you're in for an interesting and useful session. If you have seen the White Hatter before, come out for technological updates! Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation runs from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Monday, February 19th. Register now to reserve a seat. Are you prepared to help your children stay safe online? In Prince George, a number of students have been friended or engaged in Snapchat, Facebook, and Instagram conversations with people they don’t know. In some cases, trickery is used to gain the friend acceptance (for example, a picture may be stolen from someone else's profile). Inappropriate or sexualized pictures have been sent to students, and requests (and threats) have been made to obtain nude pictures in exchange. People have been fired, or not hired, based on their social media postings. Does your child know that what they post now may be public, permanent, and searchable? Are you comfortable discussing sexting with your children? Have you had that conversation? Do you know if your child is being bullied online? Education is the first step in keeping our kids safer. It is not uncommon that our children know more about the workings of the internet and about social networking than we as parents do. This presentation is designed to educate even the most computer illiterate parent. Knowledge and the understanding and application of that knowledge is power. This presentation will provide the knowledge and information, based on academically peer-reviewed research, that parents need to know about the internet and social networking to help keep their children safer. Topics discussed include: What is the Internet and Social Networking What are our kids doing online What are Chatrooms, IM’s, SMS/MMS and how to stay safer using them cellphone/smartphone and webcam safety How students are placing their privacy at risk online What is your “digital dossier” and how to protect it The good and bad of Social Networks Parental Risk Management How to secure your Social Network Understanding that everything you post online is public, permanent and searchable The dangers of screen names and profiles Who is the Internet predator and what are their tricks What is Social Engineering and how students are falling prey to this vulnerability When to be concerned as a parent Internet filtering pros/cons What is digital peer aggression and what can be done to stop it What is sexting and its consequences and what can be done to stop it What is the law specific to sexting and digital peer aggression The threat of Internet Pornography What is digital citizenship 4 Steps to keep kids safe online How can students and their schools play a role plus a whole lot more....... Darren Laur, co-owner and head instructor of Personal Protection Systems Inc., is a Retired Victoria Police Officer with 29 years of policing experience. He is an internationally recognized safety expert, published award-winning author and highly sought-after speaker who specializes in the area of Personal Safety both on-line and off-line. Darren is deeply immersed in social media and has taught digital safety for the past 13 years and has written hundreds of articles on the Internet and Social Media safety and security. Frequently asked questions: Can my child attend with me? If your child is in the grades 6 and up that have received this presentation, that would be fine. The parent presentation is designed for adult learning, and any younger student attending may be hearing information that is too advanced for their ages. Do I have to pay? No, you do not have to pay. We offer a free ticket option. Our regular ticket price is $5, and we also have an enter by donation option (minimum price of $1). Proceeds will go towards putting on additional future presentations. Will my child be receiving this presentation? This particular session is being put on in conjunction with Prince George Secondary School, and some students from that family of schools will be invited to attend during the school day.
