Family Day in Canada is tomorrow and Kelowna is preparing on all fronts for the expected of assemblage of families making their day on the town.
With temperatures expected to hover below freezing, residents can anticipate a flurry of indoor and outdoor activities available.
Here is what’s going on in and around Kelowna on Family Day:
Winter hiking is an underrated adventure and with the plethora of trails around the Okanagan, you should check it out! Try snowshoeing, or maybe the ol’ faithful Knox Mountain hike!
Outside of Kelowna, Big White is adding another winter-based activity to add to their wonderland. On top of hitting the skating rink or shredding the slopes, children and youth can participate in Big White’s Snow Ninja Challenge.
Presented by Family Channel, competitors can release their inner ninja and blast through the obstacle course –– which is blocked by a snow wall, maze gate obstacle course and a rope line crawl. Prizes will be awarded to the fastest ninjas! For more information, click here. (Competitors must register before the event. Spots are limited!).
On the other hand, there is the Arion Therapeutic Farm, where families can find comfort in petting some of the 50 farm animals located on the 12-acre natural landscape, for only $5 per person.
Stuart Park is a family favourite when it comes to the winter to-do list, with its scenic mountain view, retro tunes and comfortable location –– but on Monday night, the ice rink will be extra hot with the free Fire on Ice Family Day fire show.
Some families aren’t bred for the snow, but are looking to take their bonding to the warmth of the indoors.
If you’re feeling energetic, families can look at the Energyplex Family Recreation Centre to channel that energy. Families can expect various types of diverse activities, from scaling a 30-foot rock wall, to shooting lasers at your friends and family in a laser tag match, and more.
The YMCA will also be taking in those who like to keep moving, whether it be through water or on land. From family boot camp classes downtown, to rock climbing, crafts and a bouncy castle at the Rutland Location, and 50% off admission from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the H20 centre, there is no shortage of fun for you to get in on! (Times of activities vary, click here for more information).
On Monday, the Okanagan Heritage Museum will be host to an exhibition of children’s art from the Nk’Mip day school in the drop-in program: Our Lives Through Our Eyes. The exhibition will also be accompanied by activities, storytelling and more.
Kelowna Art Gallery will be hosting a Family Day special. Bring your future artists and get creative at the gallery this Family Day. For $5 per participant you can enjoy art activities, exhibit tours and more.
The City of Kelowna is hosting its own Family Day Fun activities at the Capital News Centre on Monday. You can look forward to numerous activities like Zorb Soccer –– a game of soccer with a twist (or a bubble) –– Rocks & Rings and several skating activities with the Kelowna Skating Club and Kelowna Speed Skating Club.
