Fundraiser for families of fallen Edmonton police officers has raised $140K in 20 hours

Canadians are mourning the death of two Edmonton police officers who were killed in the line of duty in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Const. Brett Ryan, 30, and Const. Travis Jordan, 35, were gunned down as they tried to enter an apartment building while responding to a domestic violence call.

A police source says the shooter was a 16-year-old boy who also shot and wounded his own mother.

In the wake of the tragic incident on Thursday, the Edmonton Police Foundation created a GoFundMe to support the families of Ryan and Jordan.

“All funds raised here will go to the Edmonton Police Foundation, which in turn will provide the funds to the families to assist with the costs of upcoming expenses,” the GoFundMe reads.

It has already raised more than $140,000 through 1,200 donations in just 20 hours.

Ryan has been described as a dedicated community member who loved his job. He was married and his wife is expecting their first child.

Jordan, who grew up in Nova Scotia, is being remembered as a kind officer who went above and beyond in his job.

Tributes have poured in from across the country, including a message from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on Thursday morning.

“"Every day, police officers put themselves in harm’s way to keep people safe,” he said.

“The news that two Edmonton police officers have been killed in the line of duty reminds us of that reality. I’m sending my condolences to the officers’ loved ones and colleagues — we’re here for you."
