UPDATE: Measles outbreak declared in Vancouver as tally of cases reaches 9

(UPDATE: 7:00 p.m.) – Vancouver Coastal Health has officially declared a measles outbreak in the city.

Eight infections have been identified so far this week, bringing the total to nine this month.

One of the people who were found to have the disease visited the BC Children’s Hospital Emergency Department while infectious.

VCH is now notifying people known to be in contact with the case.

British Columbia residents have been repeatedly advised to get themselves or their children vaccinated if they are under-vaccinated or unvaccinated.

Those who were at the emergency department on the times and dates below could have been exposed:

  • January 21, 2019 – 10 a.m. to 6:10 p.m.

  • January 23, 2019 – 4:45 p.m. to 11:10 p.m.

  • January 24, 2019 - 8:13 a.m. to 11:40 a.m.

  • February 1, 2019 - 2:05 p.m. to 6:55 p.m.

Anyone who was at the emergency department on those dates and times who develop symptoms suggestive of measles is advised to report to a doctor.

Symptoms include a runny nose, fever, cough, red eyes and a rash.

(Original story: 4 p.m.) The provincial health minister has urged British Columbians to get vaccinated after the fourth case of measles was confirmed in Vancouver.

Adrian Dix said it is the responsibility of parents to ensure their children are vaccinated.

He said they should think of other people’s kids who could be infected with the contagious disease.

Vaccination rates could be higher, Dix added, and said anyone who needs more information should contact their local health authority.

Vancouver Coastal Health said three measles cases were confirmed this week and that the first person who tested positive acquired the infection outside of North America.

It said all the cases involve three French schools and two of the schools are connected by a door.

All of them use the same school-bus company.

The health authority added that a case of measles confirmed last week is unrelated to the current cases and not linked to outbreaks in neighbouring Washington state or Europe.
