5 things you need to know this morning: Jan. 13, 2021

Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. Indonesia vaccinating young people against COVID-19 before the elderly

Indonesia has taken a very different COVID-19 vaccination path to most countries. After frontline workers, they are choosing to prioritize people aged 18 to 59. The first person to be vaccinated in the country was President Joko Widodo, who is, conveniently, 59. Indonesia said it was crucial to vaccinate the people most likely to spread the virus.

2. Bruce Willis sorry for not wearing mask

Bruce Willis – AKA John McClane – has apologized for making an "error of judgement" after being photographed without a mask at an LA pharmacy. He was reportedly asked to leave the establishment for his face-covering faux pas. The 65-year-old has since told People magazine it was a mistake, but that hasn't stopped the usual suspects working themselves into a tornado of rage on social media.

3. Murderer executed in US

Lisa Montgomery, the only female inmate on federal death row in the US, has been killed in Indiana after a last-minute stay of execution was lifted by the Supreme Court. The 52-year-old strangled a pregnant woman (who later died) before cutting out and abducting her baby in 2004. Montgomery is the first woman executed by the US government in 67 years.

4. Republicans abandoning Trump as president is impeachment

Some senior figures in the Republican Party have said they will back Democrat efforts to impeach President Donald Trump. Trump's opponents claim he incited a mob of his supporters to raid the Capitol building in Washington, DC last week. Trump has called the impeachment proceedings a "hoax."

5. Syria blames Israel for deadly air strikes

Syrian state media is blaming Israel for air strikes in the country said to have killed dozens of people. Sana said Israeli planes attacked the Deir-al-Zour and Albu Kamal regions. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, 57 people died in the attacks. Israel is yet to comment on the allegations.
