1. Australian temperature record equalled

The highest temperature ever recorded in Australia has been equalled. Onslow, in Western Australia, reported a high of 50.7ºC on Thursday.

2. Biden attacked for 'profoundly unpresidential' speech

President Joe Biden has been accused of making a "profoundly unpresidential" speech. Mitch McConnell, the leader of the Republican Party in the Senate, said Biden's harangue about overhauling the American political system was "beneath his office."

3. Chinese spy in UK Parliament, MI5 says

A Chinese spy has infiltrated the British Parliament, intelligence officials in the country have said. Christine Ching Kui Lee, said to be working for the Chinese Communist Party, had supposedly claimed to be striving to "increase diversity."

4. Astronomers discover 'potato-shaped' planet

Astronomers have discovered a "potato-shaped" planet. WASP-103b is about 1,500 light years away from Earth.

5. Scientists find gene that doubles risk of severe COVID-19 illness

Scientists in Poland have announced the discovery of a gene that supposedly doubles the risk of becoming seriously ill with COVID-19. The researchers said the gene was the fourth-most important factor in determining the severity of COVID-19 illness, after age, weight and sex.
