The totalitarian dictatorship in North Korea has unveiled a new type of submarine-launched missile. According to the regime, it is "the world's most powerful weapon." It comes after North Korea's hereditary despot, Kim Jong-un, said the US is his "biggest enemy."

President-elect Joe Biden, who succeeds President Trump next week, has unveiled a $1.9 trillion plan to boost the US economy amid the COVID-19 disaster. It includes $1 trillion for direct $1,400 payments to Americans. It comes as the country lurches towards 400,000 COVID-19-related deaths.

The largest state in Brazil is struggling to cope with COVID-19 patients as worries about a new variant of the virus in the country grow. Amazonas governor Wilson Lima said the state is "facing the most critical moment of the pandemic." There have been reports of hospitals running out of oxygen as medical supplies – and staff – become overwhelmed by the crisis. Over 200,000 people have died with COVID-19 in Brazil.

Chief Public Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam has said Canada is on track to hit 10,000 new COVID-19 cases a day by the end of the month. Modelling released today shows the total number of cases could read 796,630 by Jan. 24. According to the modelling, Canada is still on a "rapid growth trajectory."
