Japan has extended its state of emergency in Tokyo amid a surge of COVID-19 cases in the country. Health Minister Norihisa Tamura said Japan is now entering an "extremely frightening" stage of its fight against COVID-19.

2. Scarlett Johansson sues Disney over Black Widow earnings

American actress Scarlett Johansson has sued Disney after it streamed her new superhero movie Black Widow while it was still being shown in cinemas. She claims that she has lost money because of the move. Disney has dismissed the suit, branding it "sad."

3. Army enforcing COVID-19 lockdown in Sydney

There is some disquiet in Australia after the country's government deployed hundreds of soldiers to Sydney to enforce a COVID-19 lockdown. The Australian Lawyers Alliance said the move was "concerning."

4. Frustration among athletes as Russian Olympians allowed to compete in Tokyo

Some Olympians have been expressing disappointment that Russian athletes have been allowed to compete in Tokyo. The Russians are taking part as simply the "Russian Olympic Committee" after being sanctioned for cheating.

US President Joe Biden has urged states to offer people $100 if they get vaccinated against COVID-19. "People are dying and will die who don't have to die," the president said.
