1. Bank of Canada ends pause on hikes, raises policy rate to 4.75%

It was fun while it lasted. The Bank of Canada has raised its overnight rate by 25 basis points to 4.75%. It’s the first increase since pausing hikes in January and the highest the central bank’s key interest rate has been since April 2001.


2. Lionel Messi has decided to join MLS

Lionel Messi is crossing the pond and joining Major League Soccer. The 35-year-old Agentinian superstar has reportedly agreed to a deal with Inter Miami after spending his entire club career split between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain. Messi showed he still has it at the World Cup only a few months ago, leading his country to the title and capturing the Golden Ball as the tournament’s best player.


3. Two dead in shooting after high school grad ceremony in Virginia

A shooting outside a downtown theatre in Richmond, Virginia, where a high school graduation ceremony had just ended, resulted in two deaths on Tuesday. In total, seven people were shot and a 19-year-old suspect was arrested after trying to flee on foot. One of the fatalities was an 18-year-old who had just graduated, while the other was a 36-year-old who was there to watch the ceremony.


4. Lululemon stands by decision to fire employees who intervened in robbery

Two Lululemon employees who tried to intervene during a robbery at a store in Georgia in late April have been fired and the company is standing by the decision. CEO Calvin McDonald says the retailer has a “zero-tolerance policy” regarding engaging during a theft and it’s taught to all employees.


5. First photos of destruction caused by Halifax-area wildfire

Media in Halifax were given a tour of the neighbourhoods hardest hit by the Tantallon wildfire on Tuesday afternoon. They saw the damage and devastation first hand, including fully-destroyed homes, businesses and vehicles.
