Start your day off right with five things you need to know this morning.

Five things you need to know

1. University student donates 300 backpacks to children displaced by Lytton wildfire

A lot of university students will spend their summer partying ahead of their return to school. Paul Drakos may have been doing that as well, but he was also making a difference. The Ontario native spent the last half of his summer raising $3,000 to purchase and donate 300 backpacks to children that were displaced by the Lytton wildfire on June 30.

2. Daniil Medvedev spoils Novak Djokovic’s bid at Calendar Grand Slam

Novak Dkokovic was going for history on Sunday, but Daniil Medvedev had something to say about that. Medvedev beat Djokovic in straight sets to claim his first Grand Slam, which meant no Calendar Grand Slam for the number one player in the world. Djokovic was trying to become the first player to win all four Grand Slams in the same season since Monica Seles in 1988.

3. Kenney under fire for comments at Stampede breakfast

A video recently posted to social media has Alberta Premier Jason Kenney facing some criticism from health policy experts. In the video, which appears to be recorded without his knowledge, he says COVID-19 is not a threat to younger people. Lorian Hardcastle, a health law and policy professor, said such statements undercut people’s trust in public health policies and it creates more controversy if what Kenney claims doesn’t come to fruition.

4. Conor McGregor and Machine Gun Kelly get into it at the VMAs

The VMAs were last night and the biggest story certainly wasn’t who won what award. The headlines were all focused on an altercation between Conor McGregor and Machine Gun Kelly. Reports indicate that MGK denied McGregor a photo, which led to a skirmish and the MMA fighter throwing a drink on the musician. However, after the altercation, McGregor claimed he didn’t even know who MGK was.

5. Greater Sydney eases some COVID-19 restrictions for fully vaccinated people

Some of the strict COVID-19 restrictions in Greater Sydney have been eased today, as long as you're fully vaccinated. New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian confirmed that fully vaccinated adults will now be able to enjoy more recreational and exercise time outdoors after the province passed the six-million jab number.
