Mountain Lion breaks into California home, hides in bathroom until police arrive

A homeowner in Sonora, California got an unwelcome house guest this week that required a call from local law enforcement.

Police said that they were called for a report of a break in on the night of September 15.

“The perpetrator slyly made his way through the open front door of the home. He did not threaten the resident or steal anything,” police said in a Facebook post on the incident.

“After being spotted, he tried to make a run for it but ended up cornered in a bathroom.”

Police said that Fish and Wildlife were contacted and assisted officers with coxing the mountain lion out of the second storey bathroom window.

“He did get a stern warning about the break-in before being released,” the department joked.

Police added that Fish and Wildlife officials do not consider mountain lion sightings near homes an issue as long as the animal isn’t exhibiting aggressive behaviour towards people. Mountain Lions tend to be shy and extremely stealthy.

“That said, keep doors to your home and outbuildings closed and secure. If you do encounter a mountain lion here are some helpful safety tips: make noise, act defiant and not afraid, maintain eye contact, never run away, slowly create distance, and fight back if you’re attacked,” they advised.
