BC SPCA searching for person who left dog and puppies inside sealed box at the dump

A mother dog and her nine puppies are recovering in BC SPCA care after being discovered into a sealed box at the Puntzi Lake Landfill.

Now, the search is on to find whoever is responsible for leaving the dogs to die.

A Good Samaritan found the box at the dump on June 5 and brought it to a local veterinary clinic, where the dogs were examined and stayed overnight.

The following day, they were transferred to the Quesnel & District SPCA because there was no foster home available for them in Williams Lake.

“There is no excuse for simply walking away from a pet and leaving them to die,” says Lorie Chortyk, the SPCA’s general manager of communications.

“Abandoning animals is against the law and individuals can be prosecuted for their crime.”

The mother dog, Casey, is around a year old and is believed to be a border collie, husky mix.

She’s a little underweight and slightly timid, according to staff, but she’s a sweet dog who is focused on caring for her babies.

There are five male and four female puppies who are about a week old and will be available for adoption once they’re ready to leave their mother at seven weeks of age.

Currently, the Quesnel & District SPCA is asking for donations of puppy pads, teething toys, sheets and small collars to help care for the puppies.
