Hwy 1 now fully closed east of Golden until December

The fourth and final phase of the Kicking Horse Canyon Project is a complex one, which means traffic disruptions and full highway closures will be needed.

Work got underway earlier this month and there were some periodic closures of the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1) east of Golden.

As of today at noon, however, the highway is fully closed between Golden and Castle Junction.

The full 24-hour-per-day closure of the highway will be in place until Dec. 1.

There will be two exceptions during that time, as Hwy 1 will reopen at times during the Sept. 25-26 weekend and for the entire Thanksgiving weekend.

While the highway is fully closed, traffic will be able to detour through Radium Hot Springs by using Hwy 93 and Hwy 95, which will add 90 minutes of travel time.

The Province says their traffic management strategy has been designed to minimize and mitigate traffic disruptions while allowing work to proceed safely and on schedule.
