Eight British Columbians have started professional truck driver training to prepare for jobs in the North Okanagan and Shuswap regions.
The province has provided the Vernon branch of Okanagan College with $350,000 to deliver its professional industry driver training program.
The funding was provided through the WorkBC’s Community and Employer Partnerships (CEP) project which aims to provide training and work experience to Indigenous people and youth.
Participants began their classes on Monday (Nov. 28) and will receive 16 weeks of training, 10 weeks of on-the-job work experience and three weeks of follow support to prepare them for their careers as professional logging truck drivers.
The program will wrap up in June 2023.
“At Okanagan College we are working with industry partners to design and offer training that responds to local and regional workforce needs, and that provides more people with opportunities to advance in their careers.” said Neil Fassina, president, Okanagan College.
“The work-integrated learning model means students benefit from real experience and classroom support, so that by the end of the program they’re ready to hit the ground running – or in this case, driving.”
This is the third round of truck driver training in the BC Interior that has been funded by the province through their partnership with WorkBC.
A similar programs was hosted at the College of the Rockies last fall and another this spring through the Lillooet Tribal Council.
