BC records 564 new COVID-19 cases as hospitalizations continue to fall

British Columbia health officials reported 564 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday and 15 additional deaths.

Of the new cases, 234 were in the Fraser Health region, 111 in Vancouver Coastal Health, 95 in Interior Health, 47 in Vancouver Island Health and 76 in Northern Health.

There are currently 309 people in hospital with the virus, down 53 patients from last Thursday, with 68 people in ICU.

The number of active cases in the province also dropped again, to 4,450.

At its peak on Dec. 14, there were 10,039 active cases in BC.

To date, 104,901 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in BC, 1,680 of which are second doses.

“Despite our COVID-19 curve trending in the right direction, we continue to have new outbreaks, community clusters and high numbers of new cases. COVID-19 continues to spread widely in our communities," said Dr. Bonnie Henry.

“We need to do everything we can to break the chain of transmission. Right now is the time to do that."

On Wednesday, BC extended its state of emergency until Feb. 2.
