A serious incident involving a man experiencing a mental health crisis on a bridge in Savona ended safely Tuesday evening.
Kamloops RCMP and the Tk’emlúps RCMP Rural Detachment received a report at 6:30 pm about a man on the bridge that crosses the Thompson River.
Officers quickly attended the scene and were able to determine he was in distress, explained RCMP.
Highway 1 was quickly closed as officers attempted to negotiate with the man.
The Crisis Negotiation and Southeast District Emergency Response teams were also sent to the scene to assist the responding officers.
A BC Conservation Officer Service jet boat was also deployed into the river.
Fortunately, police were able to convince the man to move himself to safety before any of the other units had even arrived.
The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and taken to the hospital for medical care.
Hwy 1 was reopened to traffic at 8:40 pm.
