A pair of high-end mountain bikes that were stolen from tourists who were visiting Kamloops this summer have been recovered and shipped across the planet to their rightful owners.
They were among four mountain bikes stolen from the back of an RV parked on River Street while a group of tourists slept inside that night.
According to the RCMP, the value of the four bikes was estimated at nearly $30,000.
“At the time, there wasn’t much information for police to go on,” said Cpl. Crystal Evelyn. “Officers had distributed the photos and serial numbers of the bikes, but there was no surveillance or suspect images available.”
There was no progress on the case until Oct. 22, when an officer making patrols on 10th Avenue spotted a woman next to a bike and recognized it as one of the ones stolen in August.
Three days later, officers received a report of a stolen bike spotted in the Sahali Mall parking lot and it ended up being another one of the four.
While two of the stolen bikes remain outstanding, the two that have been recovered were handed over to a friend of the tourists to ship back home to New Zealand.
Evelyn said this is a great example of the benefits in contacting police and reporting stolen items, even if it seems like their recovery may be a long shot.
