Investigation underway after unlicensed pit bull attacks woman’s dog in Kelowna

A Kelowna woman has warned the community after she says her dog was attacked by a loose pit bull this week.

Yuli Lavigne shared a post to a community Facebook page saying that she was walking her chocolate Lab along Royal View Drive heading towards Knox Mountain Park on the evening of July 6.

Lavigne said that she then spotted a pit bull coming towards her, with no leash or collar.

“We stopped in an attempt to avoid an altercation,” she wrote. “We saw two guys outside of their home and I overheard them saying that someone had left the gate open.”

She continued, saying that they then made the two men aware of the loose dog and they attempted to call it back but it ignored them.

Lavigne said that while her dog was completely calm, the pit bull charged and attacked.

She described how the four adults present, including the two men and the individual who was with her, struggled to restrain the dog.

By the end of it, Lavinge said her dog was severely injured and was rushed to Fairfield Animal Hospital.

She said her dog required multiple stitches, and a portion of the dog’s ear was torn off.

The Regional District of Central Okanagan (RDCO) confirmed the incident in a statement.

A spokesperson said that the attack was reported to them the following day and that the pit bull involved was unlicensed.

The pit bull has been deemed aggressive by Dog Control and an investigation of the incident is ongoing.

“As the investigation continues, we can’t speculate on any further actions,” the RDCO added.
