UPDATE: Police incident on Byrns Road resolved, man apprehended

(UPDATE: Jan. 16 @ 3:30 pm) – The incident on Byrns Road has now been resolved and Kelowna RCMP have reopened the road to the public.

Around noon on Sunday, RCMP received a report of a “distraught” man with a weapon in the 1700-block of Byrns Road.

The Southeast District Critical Incident Program’s Emergency Response Team was deployed to the scene, along with a Critical Incident Commander and a Crisis Negotiator.

The man was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and transported to the hospital for further assessment.

Kelowna RCMP thank the public for their patience and understanding while officers worked to resolve the situation.

No other information has been released at this time.


(Original Story: Jan. 16 @ 2:16 pm) – Kelowna RCMP are on the scene of an unfolding incident on Byrns Road Sunday afternoon.

Just before noon, RCMP responded to a report of a man with a weapon on the 1700-block of Byrns Road.

Officers determined that the suspect was in a residence in the area.

Frontline officers set up three blockades to close the road from Benvoulin Road to Burtch Road as they dealt with the incident.

“At this time, the suspect is believed to be contained,” says Cst. Solana Paré of the Kelowna RCMP.

“We are requesting that the public remain away from the area at this time and if you reside in the area, to stay inside your home.”

This is an ongoing incident and RCMP have not released additional information at this time.

More information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
