Memorial Cup: Kitchener clinches spot in Sunday’s final with win over Chicoutimi

The OHL champions have finished the round robin with a perfect record.

After beating the two WHL representatives by a combined score of 11-2, the Kitchener Rangers got a bit more of a test against the QMJHL’s Chicoutimi Saguenéens on Tuesday night.

The Rangers were able to hold them off, however, to secure an all-important 3-2 victory and clinch their spot in Sunday afternoon’s Memorial Cup final.

There was no scoring in the opening frame, but a fight between Kitchener’s Jared Woolley and Chicoutimi’s Alexis Toussaint gave the crowd at Prospera Place a reason to get off their feet.

The game’s opening goal came early in the second courtesy of Luca Romano, putting the Rangers up 1-0, and Sam O’Reilly followed that up with a 2-0 tally just a couple minutes later.

Emile Ricard responded for the Sags to cut the lead in half heading into the second intermission, but Jack Pridham’s fourth of the tournament restored the Rangers lead just seconds into the final frame.

The third period was slightly marred by an ugly incident just shy of the midway mark.

Chicoutimi’s Jordan Tourigny was kicked out of the game for stomping on Christian Humphreys’ skate multiple times during a puck battle in the corner.

The match penalty for attempt to injure gave Kitchener a five-minute penalty and a chance to ice the game away, but they were unable to extend the lead with the lengthy man advantage.

Instead, it was Chicoutimi that scored the next goal with just under four minutes to play, setting up an electric finish in both team’s final round robin game.

The Saguenéens got their chances, but they were unable to produce a tying goal and the Rangers celebrated a 3-2 victory.

Christian Kirsch made 26 saves on 28 shots for his third win of the Memorial Cup, while Lucas Beckman was beaten three times on 18 shots at the other end.

Kitchener's Dylan Edwards won player of the game thanks to a two-assist performance.

The round robin will wrap up with the all-WHL battle on Wednesday, as the host Kelowna Rockets will take on the league champion Everett Silvertips.

The Rockets will be eliminated if they lose, but a victory for the hosts would produce a three-way tie for second place between Kelowna, Everett and Chicoutimi.

The tiebreaker scenario is a little convoluted if that happens and it will entirely depend on what the score is on Wednesday, so we’ll cross that bridge if and when we get there.
