TRU WolfPack adds a new goalkeeper to the men's soccer team

The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack men’s soccer team has added a goalkeeper to their roster.

Rafael Vlad grew up playing soccer with the Port Moody Soccer Club and competed in two of the highest levels of play in the province last year.

"He is big, athletic and good with his feet," said John Antulov, the head coach. "He's a good shot-stopper and just overall has a really high potential."

Vlad said he chose TRU because the coaches, staff and players created a welcoming environment.

"It felt like the right place to continue both my academic and athletic journey,” he explained.

“The school has grown so much in such a short amount of time, both on and off the pitch, and I want to be a part of what is to come."

Over the summer, the goalkeeper played the Pacific Coast Soccer League season with a Port Moody squad that went on to win the provincial championship.

He also made his Vancouver Major Soccer League debut with Port Moody this past season.

"I see myself as a hard worker who always gives 100%," Vlad said. "I feel like I can be a vocal leader on the team, who also leads by example."

The connections between Port Moody Soccer Club and the WolfPack proved to be key in Vlad making his way to Kamloops.

Srdjan Djekanovic, Port Moody's executive director and former U-20 Canadian National team professional goalkeeper, connected Antulov with the 6’3” shot-stopper.

"The WolfPack got on my radar after the big nationals win," Vlad said. "Seeing the passion of both the fans and players, as well as the atmosphere, made me look more into the school."

With an eye for law school in the future, Vlad plans to get an arts degree at TRU.

Antulov added: "With Rafael coming in, it just brings a level of competition to the group.”
