UPDATE: Fatal house fire in Nanaimo being investigated as a homicide

(Update: Aug. 15, 2022): The investigation into the discovery of a dead man after a house fire on August 11, 2022, is now being treated as a homicide.

The man was found in a home located on Athletic Street, in south Nanaimo.

The victim has been identified as 40-year-old Trevor Stross, of no fixed address.

Investigators have determined that Stross recently arrived in Nanaimo and was known to travel between Nanaimo and Victoria.

(Original story: Aug. 12, 2022):

A body has been found inside a home in Nanaimo that was destroyed by fire yesterday evening.

The Nanaimo RCMP is investigating the discovery.

The fire was reported at about 5 pm on August 11, 2022 at a home on Athletic Street.

Nanaimo fire crews were first on scene after black smoke was reported billowing from windows in the home.

Crews managed to contain the fire to the home and within 40 minutes, the blaze had been extinguished.

Fire crews then entered the home and located a deceased adult man.

The discovery of the body is deemed suspicious and has been turned over to the Nanaimo RCMP Serious Crime Section for investigation.
