Backyard and beach fire pits now allowed

The City of Penticton announced that permitted and approved locations for campfires will be allowed once again.

On Friday, Sept. 10 , BC Wildfire Service advised that campfires could be permitted throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre.

That day, five areas in the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen were allowed fires: Naramata, Kaleden, Willowbrook, Okanagan Falls and Anarchist Mountain.

Fire departments in these areas did not issue a campfire band prior to the provincial ban that was issued on June 30.

However, due to the ongoing weather conditions, the City of Penticton held off on allowing campfires to be allowed.

Now, backyard and beach fire pits are allowed for residents to enjoy.

Fireplaces using propane, natural gas, briquettes or are equipped with a spark arrestor, do not need to be inspected and a permit is not required.

The City reminds residents that outdoor fireplaces are popular and available at local hardware stores and garden centres.
