Moratorium on open burning in city, cooling centres open through weekend

It's sizzling outside (37°C as of 3 pm Friday) and the official Environment Canada heat warning now extends to Sunday. So both the City of Penticton and the Penticton fire chief have important stuff they want you to know.

First up, the City has announced that its designated air-conditioned cooling centres will remain open through Sunday.

The cooling centres, each of which will accommodate heat-impacted folks until they feel better, are listed below with their hours:

  • Penticton Community Centre at 325 Power St., 7 am to 8 pm
  • South Okanagan Events Centre at 835 Eckhart Ave., 6 am to 11 pm
  • Penticton Public Library (auditorium and lobby) at 785 Main St., 9:30 am to 8 pm
  • Penticton Seniors' Drop-in Centre at 2965 Main St., 9 am to 8 pm

Freebie water is available at all four.

Meanwhile, PFD fire chief Larry Watkinson tweeted at 12:06 pm Friday that virtually all burning within the city is now forbidden.

"As of July 29/22, 4pm we have issued a fire ban within the City of Penticton limits. No burning whatsoever unless using a ULC approved gas appliance," says the tweet.

When contacted, City Emergency Operations director Anthony Haddad confirmed that "no open burning is allowed."
