The David Douglas Botanical Garden Society is celebrating 30 years next Sunday.
This is the northernmost botanical garden in Canada and is situated at the University of Northern BC (UNBC) on the traditional territory of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation.
On Sept. 26 at 2 pm, the society will be officially revealing the Arbour and Sculpture at the entrance of the Phase 1 Educational Display Garden.
The society will also be celebrating its history, successes, and volunteers.
This area of the garden was developed on 1.6 hectares and is wheelchair accessible, free and open all year round.
Society volunteers built this section and regularly maintain it with the help of contributions form members, benefactors and donors.
The statement says that “the garden provides hours of enjoyment to residents and visitors alike as well as those looking for an incredibly beautiful location to capture cherished moments and an opportunity to enjoy the beautiful outdoors.”
The society was incorporated in 1991 as a non-profit charitable organization with a mission to establish and maintain an aesthetically pleasing botanical garden.
Providing horticultural and arboricultural education, advancing knowledge and promoting the use of plant material in northern BC are also part of the society’s mission.
Visitors can take advantage of the garden with free parking next Sunday afternoon.
