Everything you need to know about voting in PG's municipal election

The municipal election is set to take place on Oct. 20, and we want to make sure you are well prepared to vote!

Voting can seem intimidating, but it’s actually very easy.

How to know if you are eligible to vote

Anyone in PG can vote as long as you meet the following criteria:

  • are a Canadian citizen
  • are 18 years of age or older on general voting day
  • have lived in BC for at least six months
  • have lived in Prince George for at least thirty days
  • are not disqualified by law from voting

All PG residents who meet these requirements can vote. It does not matter if you own a property in PG but live somewhere else in B.C. you can also vote in Prince George elections.

This is called being a “non-resident property elector.”

You can vote under these circumstances as long as you meet the following criteria:

  • are a Canadian citizen
  • are 18 years of age or older on general voting day
  • have lived in BC for at least six months
  • have owned real estate in Prince George, registered in your name, for at least thirty days
  • are not disqualified by law from voting

What to expect when you go to vote

Voting is super easy and takes no time at all!

The first step is to make sure you are registered to vote. You may register to vote with the jurisdiction where you own property. You can do this before or during Election Day.

Once you know you are registered to vote, all you need to do is bring two pieces of identification that prove who you are and where you live. Just make sure that at least one piece of identification includes a signature.

What to bring to vote

As stated earlier, two pieces of identification are needed.

This can include but is not limited to:

  • B.C. drivers license
  • Passport
  • Social insurance card
  • Citizenship card
  • Credit or debit card
  • Utility bill issued for electricity, cable, wifi, natural gas, or other services
  • Rent bill

Where to vote

There are a couple different options for voting!

Right now, advance polls are taking place on various days. If you feel confident in casting a vote now, go for it!

You can also wait to vote on Election Day, Oct. 20. From 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. you can vote at the following locations:

  • Blackburn Elementary School
  • DP Todd Secondary School
  • Edgewood Elementary School
  • École Lac des Bois
  • John McInnis Centre
  • Kelly Road Secondary School
  • Malaspina Elementary School
  • Ron Brent Elementary School
  • Vanway Elementary School

If you have a physical disability, illness or injury that affects your ability to vote, or if you are absent from the city on general voting day, you can apply for a mail ballot. Applications will be accepted until Oct. 19. Click here for more information.

When to vote

You can vote during advance polls or on Election Day.

Advance polls are as follows:

  • Oct. 11 - Pine Centre Mall, 2055 Massey Drive
  • Oct. 16 - Prince George Conference and Civic Centre, second floor, 808 Canada Games Way
  • Oct. 17 - UNBC, Bentley Centre, 3333 University Way
