Shop fire and gas leak in Prince George

Prince George firefighters responded to two emergencies last night.

A fire in the 5000 block of Hartway Drive was reported at about 6 pm, prompting the dispatch of 13 firefighters.

When they arrived at the building – a shop – they entered to investigate.

When inside they found the fire had been extinguished by a waterline that had burst because of the fire’s heat.

The shop was unoccupied and nobody was injured during the operation.

Two hours earlier, firefighters were called to the 1000 block of 5th Avenue to help with a gas leak.

When crews arrived they found a gas line had been severed due to work in the area.

“Crews cordoned off the area and monitored adjacent buildings for any signs of natural gas,” Assistant Chief Groeneveld explained.

“Fortis BC responded to the incident and Fire crews remained on scene to assist the crews from Fortis.”
