20-year-old man set on fire while sleeping under a bridge in BC

Police are investigating after a disturbing incident this week on Vancouver Island.

According to the Campbell River RCMP, officers were called to the trails underneath a highway bridge at 7:30 am on Sept. 22.

Some fishermen who were out on the river in the early morning located a man suffering from severe burns to his back in the parking lot of the Brick.

An ambulance was called, and the victim was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said his injuries were serious, but not life-threatening.

The Major Crimes Unit believes that the man was deliberately set on fire while asleep underneath a bridge.

The man managed to shed his burning clothing and made his way to the parking lot for help. Police said it was also later determined that some of his possessions had been removed from the area.

“Setting someone on fire is truly an egregious offence,” said Cst Maury Tyre.

“Nobody, no matter what their situation in life deserves to be treated in such a horrendous manner. We at the Campbell River RCMP intend to use our resources to locate the individual/individuals responsible for this incident and hold them legally accountable. We truly wish this young man a speedy recovery.”

The investigation is in its early stages and police are looking to speak to anyone who may have been a witness to, or have information regarding the incident.

If you have information regarding this situation please contact the Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221 and reference File 2020-12211.
