Alberta man charged after police respond to a report of a stolen semi-truck in Lower Mainland

A 28-year-old man from Alberta has been charged after Abbotsford Police responded to a report of a stolen semi-truck Saturday morning.

Shortly after 10:30 am, members of the Chilliwack RCMP initiated a traffic stop after the semi-truck was spotted near Yale Road and Hwy 1.

However, the driver failed to stop for police, turned around and re-entered Abbotsford.

According to the news release, the man was observed hitting another truck before fleeing the scene. The victim was not injured, however, citizens observed the stolen semi-truck driving dangerously nearby.

Just before noon, the truck collided with a concrete meridian and the suspect, who is well-known to police, allegedly fled the scene on foot.

However, the man allegedly tried to steal another vehicle from a nearby business complex and a physical altercation occurred when police finally caught up and intervened.

Rory Serna was arrested and has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, assault and driving while disqualified.

"This event outlines the importance of law enforcement partnerships throughout our province," said patrol staff Sgt. Chris Nightingale.

"The AbbyPD is fortunate to have a close working relationship with the Chilliwack RCMP and is appreciative of their support and that of the members of the public who assisted."
