The cyclist was located by a passerby who called 911 for help.

Paramedics and firefighters attended and provided emergency first aid to the victim, however after being transported to the hospital he died as a result of his injuries.

The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) took conduct of the investigation and located the suspect vehicle believed to be involved in the collision.

The RCMP can now confirm that they have arrested the driver on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024 in the Comox Valley.

Steven Squires, age 45, of Cumberland has been charged with first degree murder and failure to stop after an accident, causing death. He remains in custody.

“While the investigation remains in its infancy, it is progressing well," said Cpl. Alex Bérubé, spokesperson for the RCMP in British Columbia. “Due to the sensitive nature of this investigation, no further details will be shared at this time."

Anyone with information is asked to contact the VIIMCU information line at 250-380-6211.
