BC teacher loses certificate for having sex with former student

The BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation has been busy of late.

Yet another teacher has lost their certificate for 15 years after engaging in sexual activity with a former student just three months after they graduated.

According to a BCCTR report, the teacher, who’s had a certificate in BC since September 2014, had this student in their class in grades 10, 11 and 12.

“During the student’s grade 12 year, the student spent a significant amount of time with the teacher at the school and also spent time with the teacher outside of school hours,” the report explained.

The student then graduated from the school in June and the sexual relationship between the two began three months later in September.

“The teacher engaged in boundary violations with other students at the school, such that students viewed the teacher more as a friend than a teacher,” the report continued.

According to the report, the teacher admitted to the misconduct and agreed to have their certificate of qualification cancelled.

In addition, they won’t apply for a new certificate of qualification, an independent school teaching certificate or any other authorization to teach in the K-12 education system for 15 years.

This decision comes one week after another teacher received a 15-year ban for having sex with two former students.
