Ex-Mountie who led investigation on ‘Surrey Six’ murders pleads guilty to obstruction

An ex-Mountie who led the investigation in a gang-related mass murder in Surrey has pleaded guilty to breach of trust and obstruction of justice.

Sgt. Derek Brassington was sentence to two years less a day after submitting a guilty plea on Friday morning in B.C. Supreme Court, avoiding jail time and a 10-week trial. He was also ordered to pay $10,000 in restitution.

According to the indictment, Brassington breached the standard demanded of him in managing a witness and obstructed justice by compromising the integrity and safety of a witness related to the investigation of the Surrey Six murders in 2007.

The former sergeant played a key role in the investigation of the slaying of six people, including two innocent bystanders, in a Surrey highrise. Brassington was charged in 2011 and resigned from the RCMP in 2013.

A total of 14 conditions were imposed on him, including house arrest between the hours of 7 p.m. to 6 a.m., with the exception of parenting, employment, or medical reasons.
