Incredibly rare blue whale sighting made in BC waters

Since 2002, less than 50 blue whales have been spotted in BC waters.

One of those came earlier this month on a Department of Fisheries and Oceans expedition near Haida Gwaii.

It was shared to Facebook by the Marine Education & Research Society.

The blue whale is the largest animal to ever live on the planet earth, but they’re now endangered after an estimated 9,500 whales were “harvested” between 1910 and 1965.

The photo posted by MERS doesn’t do the size of the whale justice, as the massive whale can get up to nearly 30 metres long and weigh up to 150,000 kilograms.

It's considered the biggest animal to have ever lived on earth and even newborns can be nearly 7 m long and weigh around 3,600 kg.

A blue whale’s blow can reach up to 6 m high, its tail is up to 4.5 m wide and the animals tongue is an astonishing 4 to 6 m long, weighing 4 tonnes.

Although the animals typically travel in herds, the MERS only spotted one on this particular journey.
