Mounties in BC are hunting for a man accused of hitting an officer with a car while fleeing a traffic stop.
Tobin Peter Haas, 57, struck the Mountie “after a brief roadside exchange” in Delta, police said.
It happened on Feb. 17 at about 10:30 am.
BC Highway Patrol said officers were conducting traffic stops on Hwy 91 when they pulled over Haas’ vehicle, which was associated with a warrant.
He soon fled the scene, striking the officer, who received non-life-threatening injuries.
The Mountie was taken to hospital after the incident, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Haas’ vehicle has since been recovered, police said, but the man himself is still at large.
He is wanted for breaking and entering as well as the Feb. 17 incident.
Police warned the public against approaching Haas. Anyone that spots him should instead call police.
“Our thoughts are with our officer and his family as he recovers at home, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Delta PD, Surrey RCMP, Surrey Police Service, and other responders for their quick actions and assistance as this incident unfolded,” said Insp. Brian Donaldson, officer in charge of South Coast BC Highway Patrol.
“We are asking you, Mr. Haas, to please do the right thing and turn yourself in.”
BC Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have witnessed the incident and anyone who has dashcam footage of the incident to contact BC Highway Patrol – Burnaby at 604-526-9744 and refer to file number 2024-424.
