Snowmobiler dead after avalanche in northern BC

One person is dead after getting trapped in an avalanche in the backcountry of northern BC.

RCMP have confirmed that the tragic incident occurred on Saturday in the Power King/Bijoux Falls area near the small town of Mackenzie.

According to police, two men were snowmobiling following a significant storm in the region that left up to 70 centimetres of fresh snow.

The avalanche happened just before 2 pm and left one of the snowmobilers was buried while the second sledder was unhurt.

A search and rescue team alongside avalanche-trained searchers from Prince George later found the man dead.

RCMP reported that the man was 35-years-old and originally from Dawson Creek.

BC Coroner's Service is investigating the man's death, but officials offered no further details.

Avalanche Canada said there were "very dangerous avalanche conditions" in the alpine at the time.
