Strengthening British Columbia's crisis lines: Mental Health Minister

Planned enhancements to British Columbia’s crisis line services were announced on Friday, along with an additional $2.35 million investment.

The enhancements will include an increased capacity to answer crisis calls, improved recruitment and retention strategies, upgrade and improved technology and standardized training for call responders.

Since July 2020, more than $1.6 million has been provided to crisis line centres to help improve capacity during the COID-19 pandemic.

"Unprecedented emergencies like the floods, the poisoned drug crisis and COVID-19 pandemic means crisis lines are busier than ever," said Sheila Malcolmson, minister of mental health and addictions.

The Crisis Line Enhancement Project will be overseen by the Provincial Health Services Authority who will work with health authorities and crisis line providers to transition into a single service contract.

This provincial coordination of crisis lines is anticipated to come into effect in the spring of 2022 with new contracts with service providers coming into effect in the fall.

"Crisis line services have never been more important, and thanks to this investment from the provincial government, we will soon be able to provide an even better service to British Columbians,” said Susan Wannamaker, executive vice-president of clinical service delivery, PHSA.
