Surrey RCMP seized a large quantity of psilocybin mushrooms from a residence in Clayton Heights.
On Monday, Sept. 6, Surrey Fire Services attended a residence in the 7000-block of 196 Street to respond to a carbon monoxide alarm where they noted signs of illicit drug activity and called the RCMP to assist.
When officers arrived they found what they believed to be a “magic mushroom” drug laboratory.
As a result they arrested a woman on the scene but she was later released pending the continued investigation.
RCMP obtained a search warrant and over two days the RCMP Drug Section and the Clandestine Lab Enforcement and Response (CLEAR) Team investigated the property.
Officers located and seized 11 kilograms of the mushrooms, which they estimated to be approximately 6,200 doses, and 18 kg of the wet mushrooms.
The grow operation was dismantled and items used to produce the drug were also seized.
“The possession, sale and production of magic mushrooms remains illegal in Canada,” says Sgt. John Murray of the Surrey RCMP Drug Unit.
“There are risks when consuming illegal substances such as psilocybin mushrooms as they are not regulated so the potency and effects can vary significantly.
The investigation is ongoing and charges have not been laid.
The Surrey RCMP also remind property owners to do regular checks of their rental properties for illegal activities such as this – they also point out that some insurance does not cover damages from mold or other structural damage when it is incurred by illegal activity.
