Thankfully, BC has the lowest odds of becoming the US's 51st state

Of course, US President-elect Donald Trump's provocative remark last week that Canada should become the 51st American state has caused a furor.

Online gambling platform Casino.org tried to quantify the commotion by analyzing millions of comments on X and looking at Moneyline odds in relation to the US annexing Canada.

While Canada joining the US a la Trump's quip is theoretically possible, it's highly unlikely.

But, it has certainly riled Canadians up and also got the rest of the world all a twitter, too.

And it's forced a fantastical conversation about the differences between Canadians and Americans and unified Canadians in our desire to be independent.

We don't want the US dollar (even if it is worth more), we want continued free health care and the Maple Leaf, the beaver, poutine, hockey and snow as symbols of our great vast nationhood.

We want control over our own lands, water, oil and gas, forests, resources and culture.

Anyway, back to the Casino.org numbers.

Social media sentiments saw 66% of Canadians posting negative comments about the idea of Canada becoming the US's 51st state. 60% of Americans were also negative and 65% of others around the world were against the US gobbling up Canada.

Moneyline odds show Canada is the 5th most likely to become the 51st state at a 9% probability.

That puts us behind Puerto Rico at 40% probability, the US Virgin Islands at 29%, Guam at 25% and Greenland at 20%.

Yes, Trump would also like control of Greenland and the Panama Canal, which also have not gone over well with Denmark, of which Greenland is an autonomous territory, and Panama.

Moneyline also generated odds on Canadian provinces and territories implied probability of becoming the 51st state.

Thankfully, BC had the lowest odds at 2% probability.

Quebec was highest at 33%, Alberta 25%, Yukon 17%, Nova Scotia 17%, Northwest Territories 11%, New Brunswick 11%, Ontario 9%, Manitoba 8% and Saskatchewan 8%.

In an open letter published in the national Globe and Mail and Montreal Le Press newspapers, former Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien trumpeted that Canadians will never give up the best country in the world to join the US.

Chretien also told Trump to "give your head a shake."

Current Prime Minister Justin Trudeau blamed Trump of using talk of the US annexing Canada as a distraction from all of Trump's other controversies.
