A PETA eyewitness exposé has unveiled some disturbing footage allegedly shot at a hog farm in Abbotsford, B.C.
The video, released by PETA on Tuesday, and allegedly shot at Excelsior Hog Farm, shows corpses of dead piglets among live animals, other young piglets struggling to survive, pigs with large growths and infections along with pigs crammed together in tight cages.
BC SPCA confirmed they have seen the video and that the organization has launched an investigation into the farm.
"Obviously the video is emotional to watch," said spokesperson Marcie Moriarty.
"From an investigation perspective, we have to separate what are possibly troubling industry practices from what could potentially be viewed as violations of B.C.'s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act."
WARNING: This video contains footage which may be disturbing to some. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.
According to Moriarty, BC SPCA will be sending a constable and a veterinarian to the farm to evaluate its practices.
Under B.C. law, hog farmers must care for the health of the herd and remove any animals identified as injured, sick or deceased.
According to PETA, the farm is one of the largest pig factory farms in the province and is owned by a director of the BC Pork Producers Association.
BC SPCA says the farm has no history of animal seizures or charges.
