David Eby is the second-most popular premier in Canada, if a new poll is to be believed.
According to the Angus Reid Institute’s survey, Premier Eby is behind only Manitoba’s Wab Kinew – a fellow New Democrat – in the popularity stakes.
But Eby is tied with two other premiers: Alberta’s Danielle Smith and Newfoundland and Labrador’s Andrew Furey. The trio are sitting on 46 per cent approval ratings, the pollster claims.
Kinew is way ahead with 66 per cent, while Ontario’s Doug Ford (31 per cent) and New Brunswick’s Blaine Higgs (30 per cent) are plodding along at the rear.
The news will no doubt bring cheer to Premier Eby, whose job is on the line in the Oct. 19 election. But it's not all good news: the poll also found that 45 per cent of people in BC disapprove of their premier.
Recent polls, meanwhile, have shown the BC NDP and BC Conservatives are just about tied.
Angus Reid pointed to Eby’s recent policy changes, including on the carbon tax and involuntary care for the mentally ill, explaining that, despite the premier being branded a “flip-flopper,” his U-turns “have not negatively impacted views of the premier at this point.”
Quite the opposite, in fact: Eby saw a three-point bump in popularity in September, the pollster said.
The full breakdown of the data on Eby is as follows:
Strongly approve: 13 per cent
Moderately approve: 33 per cent
Moderately disapprove: 16 per cent
Strongly disapprove: 29 per cent
Not sure: 9 per cent
