VIDEO: Former runner runs again

If there's an election in the Kelowna area, you can count on Silverado Socrates to get her name on the ballot.

When we last spoke with Socrates, she was running independently in the last federal election.

The former internationally competitive track athlete has also run for the Mayor's job.

This time she's after the MLA's seat in Kelowna-Lake Country.

Her first inclination was to run for the Green Party. "I didn't get my name in quick enough," she explained. "It was being vetted."

But rather than sitting out the election, Socrates decided to run as an independent.

"I believe I've got something worth hearing," she told KelownaNow, "and I've been standing for the community for a long time."

At her suggestion, we met with Socrates at Carney's Pond, with a flock of geese honking in the background.

"We need to have more of that," she said, referring to the recent park improvements. "That's something that distinguishes any community from any other community is its local environment and history."

Socrates said she feels more confident with each campaign she takes on.

"Over the course of time," she said, "it's about getting over my nerves and learning to channel them properly and having people see that I'd do okay if I was able to represent the community."

Voters in Kelowna-Lake Country and across BC go to the polls October 24.
