VIDEO: Green Party hopes to make gains in Kelowna West

"I want to do politics differently," said Peter Truch. The Green Party Candidate for Kelowna West was inspired to run by his two children and drawn to the Greens because of how they differ from the mainstream choices.

The first thing he brings up is how the Green Party allows its MLAs to vote freely.

"I want the opportunity to be a voice for the people of Kelowna West," said Truch, "not whatever the party whip says."

He said the Party has a bright future, but it has to continue to demonstrate it's about more than the environment.

"We have been branded as a bunch of tree huggers," Truch admitted while speaking with KelownaNow.

"The reality is, yes, we absolutely do care about the environment," he added. "But that's not the only thing."

"We have platforms on everything from affordable housing," he continued, "to pandemic recovery, to small business supports."

Truch said the snap election call came because the Liberals were down in the polls, with the Greens going through a change of leadership. He points out that the Premier broke a signed agreement with his chosen party by doing so.

"Mr. Horgan unfortunately just decided to say 'No, you know what? I see the chance to grab power and so I'm going to try and go after it', and it kind of speaks to his trustworthiness," he explained.

Truch has been impressed with the level of support he's been getting when he knocks on doors, but he's realistic that the goal in this campaign is to build support.

"As much as I'd like to say it's this election," he said, about his chances of winning. "I do honestly see the next election."

British Columbians go to the polls October 24.
