Hwy 1 could be closed for 'several days' in Fraser Canyon amid avalanche risk

Hwy 1 will be closed in the Fraser Canyon today, the BC Government has warned.

It’s due to a heightened risk of avalanches caused by recent mild weather and the upcoming atmospheric river.

The road will be closed between Yale and Boston Bar from 8 am this morning.

Avalanche experts will evaluate the closure “daily,” the Province said, but it “may take several days” for the highway to become safe enough to reopen.

“The ministry's avalanche program is run by highly trained avalanche professionals who monitor weather and snowpack conditions continuously during the avalanche season,” the Province explained.

“The program manages more than 60 avalanche areas that include almost 1,400 individual avalanche paths throughout the province.”

Hwy 3, meanwhile, will close for avalanche control east of Hope at 9 am.
