Salmon Arm RCMP are warning residents after receiving multiple calls about the latest scam making its rounds in the region.
According to police, residents may receive another scam call from someone representing the "Publisher's Clearing House." This is an addition to the CDRA scam calls that are very common right now.
The scam claims the resident has won a car or sizable amount of money from the PCH. All the resident has to do is pay a sum of money, usually $500, to cover the delivery costs of their prize.
"Remember there are no prize feed or taxes in Canada, If you won it is free," wrote S/Sgt. Scott West. "The fraudster asks that money be paid to an account number complete with transit number. Do not initiate a transfer of funds. It is a scam!"
The fraudster may also ask the "winner" for some bill payments to accounts. It is unknown what they are using this information for.
To avoid getting scammed, be wary about unsolicited calls, never give out personal information over the phone, and do your own research. If something is too good to be true, it usually is.
