First Nations Education Foundation unveils a Language Revitalization Pole this weekend in Port Alberni

The First Nations Education Foundation (FNEF) unveiled the Language Revitalization Pole on Saturday, Sept. 18 in Port Alberni.

The pole resides on Nuu-chah-nulth territory and aims to draw attention to the importance of Indigenous languages and culture in Canada.

There are over 30 Indigenous languages represented in BC and there more than 60 Indigenous languages across Canada, each with their own dialects and histories.

According to FNEF, “almost three-quarters of these languages are at risk of being lost within this generation.”

The project was initiated by FNEF in 2018 as part of the United Nations 2019 International Year of Indigenous Languages.

“We are extremely proud and excited that the Language Revitalization Pole project [...] has now been completed and is accessible for the entire world to see,” said Scott Jeary, FNEF executive director.

“We want to thank everyone who helped make the Language Revitalization Pole a reality, including lead carver Tim Paul and the team of carvers he assembled, the First Nations who participated in the project, and the many sponsors and donors."

The permanent home for the pole received support from local First Nations and communities while the Tseshaht First Nation helped organize the unveiling ceremony.

For residents living in the area, or for those who may be making a visit to the Island in the near future, the Pole is located at the intersection of Roger Street and Victoria Quay, near Roger Creek (Port Alberni).

The First Nations Education Foundation is an Indigenous-led, federally registered charity organization.

FNEF collaborates with First Nation governments to develop language revitalization programs for at-risk Indigenous dialects and uses modern education practices and technology.
