Wooden canoe stolen from Cowichan Tribes Daycare

Police are hoping the community will be able to help locate a wooden canoe that was recently stolen from a daycare facility in Duncan.

According to police, in the evening hours of Dec. 26, 2021, a man entered the fenced playground area at the Le'lun'uy'lh Daycare (Cowichan Tribes Daycare) and stole their small child-sized canoe.

Recently, an unknown person shared a photo of the man walking through the snow with the wooden canoe on his back.

"It is a terrible shame that the children will miss their wooden canoe. I really hope the community will be able to come together to get it returned to them," said Cst. Bert Calvo with the Indigenous Policing Services Unit.

After the photograph was shared, the theft was reported to the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP.

"Crimes such as these can only be solved with the help of our community and it is fantastic that someone shared this image,” said Cst. Erin Stevenson.

Stevenson is hopeful that the witness who snapped this photograph or anyone with any information about this theft, will contact the detachment at 250-748-5522 or provide their information to Cowichan Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
