West Kelowna to hold special ceremony for fallen Fire Captain Troy Russell

The City of West Kelowna has announced it will take part in a special Day of Mourning Ceremony this Friday, April 26.

The ceremony will be held to commemorate the loss of Fire Captain Troy Russell who passed last September after battling cancer.

His death is considered to be the West Kelowna Fire Department’s first line-of-duty death as the cancer was directly related to his 20-year career as a firefighter.

The ceremony will include addresses by West Kelowna Fire Chief Jason Brolund and Fire Captain Nathan Pike among others.

At approximately 10:15 a.m. Friday morning a helicopter will be flying overhead as it delivers a picnic table with a commemorative plaque in honour of Capt. Russell that will be installed at the peak of Mt. Boucherie Rush Trail.

The public is welcome to attend the ceremony scheduled to take place 10 a.m. at West Kelowna Municipal Hall.
