BC wildfires by the numbers: 4 fire centres with more than 40 active wildfires

Wildfires continue to burn all throughout British Columbia and the statistics show that nearly no part of the province is exempt.

When things first started to get bad in July, the majority of notable fires were found in the Kamloops Fire Centre.

However, that’s no longer the case, as there are currently more than 40 wildfires burning in each of four different fire centres.

Here’s how the 250 active wildfires in BC break down by fire centre:

• Kamloops Fire Centre - 75
• Southeast Fire Centre - 60
• Prince George Fire Centre - 51
• Cariboo Fire Centre - 43
• Coastal Fire Centre - 15
• Northwest Fire Centre - 6

There are currently 3,245 BC Wildfire Service firefighters battling fires throughout the province and they’re being helped by 301 out-of-province personnel.

At this time, 212 helicopters and planes are supporting those ground crews.

As a result of the 250 active fires in BC, a total of 65 evacuation orders and 99 evacuation alerts are in place, which are affecting 4,620 and 21,042 properties respectively.

Here’s how they break down by Emergency Management BC region:

• Central - 58 orders and 73 alerts
• Southeast - 6 orders and 8 alerts
• Northeast - 1 order and 13 alerts
• Southwest - 0 orders and 4 alerts
• Northwest - 0 orders and 1 alert
• Vancouver Island Central Coast - none

Since April 1, a total of 1,308 wildfires have burnt 555,904 hectares of land in BC.
