BC wildfires by the numbers: Thousands more hectares burn, hundreds more properties on alert

Thousands more hectares have burned in wildfires across British Columbia.

The latest figures from the BC government – summing up the crisis as of 7 pm on Thursday – show 462,959 hectares have burned since April 1.

Wednesday’s figure was 454,433 hectares.

The number of fires burning in the province remains 248, the new data show.

There have been 1,251 wildfires since April 1.

Here’s a breakdown of the active fires in the province by BC Wildfire Service centre:

  • Cariboo: 39

  • Coastal: 3

  • Kamloops: 79

  • Northwest: 4

  • Prince George: 50

  • Southeast: 67

Here’s a breakdown of the resources deployed to fight the fires:

  • BC Wildfire Service personnel: 2,120

  • BC contractors: 1,092

  • Out-of-province: 299

  • Aircraft from BC: 193

  • Aircraft from out of province: 0

  • Fireline heavy and mobile equipment: 548

Here’s a breakdown of evacuations (difference between Wednesday’s numbers shown in parentheses):

  • Evacuation Orders: 60 (-2)

  • Evacuation Alerts: 92 (+5)

  • Number of properties on order: 3,058 (-385)

  • Number of properties on alert: 18,691 (+994)

Here’s a breakdown of orders and alerts by BCWS centre:

  • Vancouver Island Central Coast: 0

  • Northwest: 0 orders and 1 alert

  • Northeast: 1 order 13 (+1) alerts

  • Central: 53 orders and 68 (+4) alerts

  • Southeast: 6 (-2) orders and 8 alerts

  • Southwest: 0 orders and 2 alerts
