VIDEO: Alphonso Davies scores first ever goal for Canada at men's World Cup

What a start for Canada!

After failing to score against Belgium on Wednesday, despite a number of quality chances and 21 shots towards goal, today's match against Croatia started much differently.

In fact, it took just 70 seconds for Canada to find the back of the net this morning, the first ever goal at the men's World Cup for Canada.

And, of course, it was scored by Alphonso Davies - sweet redemption after his missed penalty against Belgium.

It was a beautiful goal , with Tajon Buchanan sending in a perfect cross into the box for Davies as he streaked towards the goal.

Davies got up between two Croatian defenders and drilled a header past the keeper and into the goal to give Canada a hugely-important 1-0 lead.

"A goal the country has been dreaming about for decades," exclaimed an excited Luke Wileman on the call for TSN.

Not only was the goal historic for Canada and hopefully the first of many at the World Cup for our men's team, it was the fastest group stage goal at the World Cup in eight years.

Clint Dempsey scored for the United States just 29 seconds into a match against Ghana in 2014.

Canada still has a 1-0 lead against Croatia now 20 minutes into their match in Qatar and it really is one they need to win if they hope to advance past the group stage.

We'll have a post game story for you later this morning!
